The below article that appeared in the October 1928 issue of the national publication, Concrete Highways & Public Improvements Magazine was written by the then City Engineer, W.C. Clubb:

"Nothing But Concrete" Paving Program Keeps Pace with the Growth of Eugene, Oregon
by W.C. Clubb, City Engineer
October 1928

As the article states, the overall response from the public was:

  • Eugene citizens are proud of their paving program.
  • Home builders were petitioning for concrete streets.

and the advantages cited were...

  • Smooth riding quality
  • Skid proof surface for safety and durability
  • Maintenance costs have been minimal

Many in our area are not aware of this history of the streets in the University of Oregon area of Eugene. Interestingly, many of these streets continue to perform with minimal maintenance over 80 years later.

At Eugene Sand & Gravel, we have been part of the progress that has built the infrastructure of Lane County over the last 100 years,

and we look forward to providing this support for the next 100 years as well.
